Problems with sewage backing up on Pershing Street and a need for a permanent fix to a water main break near Bridge Street have prompted Mayor Michael Villa to issue a “Declaration of Emergency” for the two situations in order to apply for emergency funds from New York State.
According to Villa, at least three residential homes on Pershing Street have been experiencing chronic problems with sewage overflowing through sink and bathtub drains. During periods of heavy rain, several other homes also experience similar problems.
Although a main break on the South Side near Bridge Street was temporarily bypassed earlier this month, a permanent fix is still required.
Villa said the city is currently getting quotes for both the projects and expects a response from the state within days.
