Guy Park Avenue residents who were displaced when their home was destroyed by fire last week are beginning to receive help from local agencies and generous community members. Yesterday, Third Ward Alderman Chad Majewski, who lives across the street from the four apartment unit home, announced a benefit event that will be held this Sunday at the Century Club, 130 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, from 12pm to 3pm. The event will feature a bake sale to raise money for the residents as well as music by DJ Drew Carey.
Yesterday, Majewski recalled the day of the fire, and how talking with one of the displaced residents prompted him to action.
“That weekend I ran into one of the tenants, a father with three little girls. He explained to me that they have nothing and were unable to retrieve anything from the home. He was currently living with family,” Majewski explained.
After that, Majewski said he reached out the Red Cross, which along with several other local charities, had already given the residents some assistance. The organization then put all the residents in contact with him about organizing the benefit to raise additional funds and donations to help get the residents back on their feet.
Majewski posted some the residents’ requests for clothing, furniture, and toys on Facebook yesterday, but announced today that those needs have now all been met.
Residents who would like to help can either bring a cash or gift card donation to the event on Sunday, or bring baked goods to be sold at the bake sale. For more information, visit the Facebook page for the event here.
