How to beat the heat Friday and Saturday

Temperatures in the Amsterdam area are expected to reach near ninety degrees today and tomorrow with high humidity. Although Montgomery County is not under a high heat advisory as of yet, advisories have been issued for surrounding areas in the Capital District.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday that he has directed state parks to extend their swimming hours through this weekend. In the Capital District area, The Victoria Pool in Saratoga Spa State Park and the beaches at Grafton Lakes State Park and Moreau Lake State Park will remain open until 8 PM.

According to the Montgomery County Department of Health, the following locations are available for residents who need relief from the heat:

  • Amsterdam– Horace Inman Center 53 Guy Park Avenue, Monday-Friday 8 am–4 pm. Closed on Holidays
  • Canajoharie – Canajoharie Library 2 Erie Boulevard, Tuesday, Thursdays & Friday 10am – 5pm Wednesday 10am – 7:30 pm, and Saturday-Sunday 12 Noon – 5 pm Closed on Mondays and Holidays
  • Fultonville – Town of Glen Town Office Building 7 Erie Street Fultonville, Monday-Friday 8 am – 2 pm. Closed on Holidays
  • Fort Plain – VFW Post 3275 30 River Street, Monday- Saturday 12 Noon – 5 pm
  • Fort Plain – Fort Plain Senior Center 204 Canal Street, Fort Plain , Monday – Friday 8am – 12 Noon. Closed Weekends and Holidays
  • St. Johnsville – St. Johnsville Community Center and Village Hall 16 Washington Street, Monday-Thursday 8 am – 4 pm and Fridays 8am – Noon. Closed on Holidays

The City of Amsterdam public pool is open throughout the week from 11am to 5pm. Today there will be free ice cream at the pool courtesy of Stewart Shops.
