Lettering spelling out “Amsterdam” was added to the sides of the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook pedestrian bridge this week. According to Shane Mahar, deputy communications director for the Canal Corporation, the bridge is entering the final phase of its construction as workers are beginning to add the historical and artistic elements of the bridge, including two circular pieces which include the wheel of life mosaic, and a compass design, as well as other engravings on the deck which include names of the various Amsterdam neighborhoods, landmarks, and notable people.

Mahar said the bridge will be a “unique asset for the region, another opportunity to attract people to the canal system.”

Mahar said the construction is on track for labor day opening of the bridge.

On Saturday, Riverlink Park will host Riverfest, an all day event running from 11am to 10pm, which will feature arts and craft vendors, food vendors, kids activities, tug boat tours, and live bands and beer sampling in the evening. The event will conclude with fireworks at 9:45pm.
