The Amsterdam Veterans Commission hosted the city’s annual Veterans Day Parade on Guy Park Ave., Tuesday morning culminating with a ceremony at the memorial park. Guest speakers for the event included Amsterdam Mayor Ann Thane, New York State Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, and special guest speaker Col. David Traskos.
“You are and always shall be our role models,” said Traskos noting those who served in conflicts from World War Two to Operation Enduring Freedom. Traskos asked veterans and their families to step forward and raise their hands to be recognized.
Traskos noted that November 10, 2014 marked the 239th anniversary of the founding of the United States Marine Corp. This past October was the 239th birthday of the United States Navy.
The event included performances by the Amsterdam High School marching band, and bagpiper Misha Murdoch. There was also a flyover by World War Two era “Texan” trainer aircraft.
