Special meeting on casino, budget presentation tonight

Montgomery County legislators will meet in a special session at 5 p.m. today to decide whether they want to support siting a casino in Rensselaer County.

That meeting will be held in the legislative chambers on Broadway. It will be followed at 6 p.m. by County Executive Matthew Ossenfort’s budget presentation, which will be held at the county courthouse.

John Signor, president and chief executive officer of Capital District Off-Track Betting, asked legislators last week to pass a resolution supporting the Rensselaer County site. District 6 Legislator John M. Duchessi Jr. sponsored the measure, and District 5 Legislator Terry Bieniek seeconded it. Both, however, pulled their sponsorship after other legislators said they wanted to hear from other competitors for the casino before making up their minds. Legislature Chairman Thomas Quackenbush scheduled the special meeting for today in time for Signor to make a presentation to the state Gaming Commission on Sept. 8.
