Do you have the courage to walk the historic Green Hill Cemetery in the dark? Are you interested in learning more about the people who lived in Amsterdam in the 19th and early 20th centuries – and may have decided to stay around and keep a watchful eye on their city? Then mark your calendars for October 20th & 21st as the Historic Amsterdam League (HAL) and Green Hill Cemetery Association join together once again to present “Ghosts of the Past” evening walking tours at Green Hill Cemetery.
If you joined us in prior years you know that these tours will feature visits to various gravesites where tour guests will “meet” and hear the stories of the prominent Amsterdamians buried there. This year’s tour will once again include all new “residents”, but, of course, one really never knows who may be encountered…
Tours start and end at Amsterdam City Hall, 61 Church Street, where parking will be available. Tour goers will be bused from City Hall to Green Hill Cemetery to begin the tour, and return at its conclusion via the original luminary lined Green Hill entrance and Sanford Gates. Ticket holders must check-in in the lobby; please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the time of your tour. Tours will begin at 6:00 P.M. both evenings with a new tour departing approximately every 30 minutes until 8:30 P.M. Tours will last approximately one hour. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended as the tour will be over uneven ground in Green Hill Cemetery. You are invited to enjoy free Halloween refreshments at City Hall while awaiting your tour or when (if?) you return.
Tour tickets, $10.00 per adult and $5.00 per child 10 yrs. and under, will go on sale October 10th at The Book Hound, 16 Main St., and Damiano’s Flowers, 2 Hewitt St., in Amsterdam. Tickets must be purchased in advance to guarantee accommodation. Unsold tickets – if any remain – will be available at the door for that evening’s tours. Each tour is limited to a maximum of 24 guests. All proceeds benefit the Historic Amsterdam League and the Green Hill Cemetery Association.
Mark your calendar, get your ticket, and join us for a most out-of-the-ordinary October evening exploring Amsterdam history.
